Acid-base extraction of phenethylamines.

In addition to the standard purification with acetone and isopropanol, an acid-alkaline extraction method is used. This method consists in a sequential change in the form of the amine. Amphetamine salt (or other phenethylamine) is dissolved in a minimum amount of water, then a small portion of a 30% alkaline solution (NaOH or KOH) is added, controlling the change in pH to 12 (strong alkaline environment). During the oxidation process, the amine is converted to a free base, which must be extracted with ether or another non-polar solvent. The aqueous fraction with impurities is disposed. The solvent is distilled off, the resulting pure base is diluted with isopropanol and oxidized with a selected acid to neutral pH=7.
