This is turning lysergic acid amide into the ester, which can be hydrolyzed to lysergic acid.

Just wondering, I'm not a chemist but I can do math, and this looks like 2+2=4

Shulgin statednin TiHKAL that "strong base treatment" can knock the amide off of the top to make lysergic acid but didn't mention which base, and another thing I read had mentioned ammonium hydroxide as a base in this.
But this is more specific and definitely nice to read ..
