Morphine extraction:
1. 1 kg Opium was dissolved in boiling water (750 ml).
2. It was added 250 g Ca(OH)2 and the heating removed.
3. The mixture was allowed to cool and stand overnight.
4. The solution was filtered, the residue dissolved in boiling water (250 ml) and re-filtered.
5. The combined filtrates were re-heated until the solution steamed, at this point the pH of the solution was adjusted to 8–9 with NH4Cl.
6. Left to stand overnight.
7. The solution was filtered to leave behind morphine base (65 g).
Morphine HCl:
1. Morphine base (65 g) was dissolved in 600 ml hot warm water.
2. 19 ml concentrated HCl and 25 g of charcoal were added.
3. The solution was warmed for 10 min and then filtered.
4. The filtrate was left to stand overnight.
5. Filtered to leave behind morphine hydrochloride (30 g).
Heroin base:
1. Acetic anhydride (80 g) was added slowly to morphine (30 g).
2. The resulting solution was heated and stirred at 85 *C for 2.25 h.
3. Allowed to cool to room temperature.
4. The solution was diluted with cold water (150 ml).
5. The solution was cooled on ice and made basic (pH 8– 10) with cold 10% sodium carbonate.
6. The resulting aqueous solution was extracted with chloroform (150 ml) and dried over MgSO4.
7. Evaporated to leave diacetylmorphine base (24 g).
Heroin HCl:
1. Diacetylmorphine base (from morphine hydrochloride) (24 g) was dissolved in acetone (150 ml).
2. Concentrated HCl was added at pH - 6.
3.The solution evaporated to leave behind diacetylmorphine hydrochloride (23 g).
