Could be not enough base was added to liberate the all of the methylamine base from the Hcl salt.

Don't ever add Hydrochloride Acid to DCM to to crystallize. I don't care who said what, or who's banging your mom--- it does a shit job as a crystallization solvent when using Hydrochloric Acid. Dry Hydrogen Chloride *gas is a different story, though. But most don't have access to dry Hydrogen Chloride gas.

Yes, you could distill off the DCM (atmospheric or otherwise), but while it does has a lovely smell, it's a carcinogen. You could try a dilute acid extraction from the DCM, and take it from there, or skip DCM altogether.
