Chloral Hydrate Synthesis

Thought I share this Chloral Hydrate Synthesis route I found on the web once, which is a quite enjoyable, early sleeping aid.

Needed:
- anhydrous ethyl alcohol
- concentrated hydrochloric acid (how concentrated?)
- calcium hypochlorite


Pour pure anhydrous ethyl alcohol into a large flask and lower it’s ph to below 5 using concentrated hydrochloric acid. Saturate the solution with calcium hypochlorite. Boil/evaporate solution to yield chloral hydrate.

DEA:)maximum 40% for aqueous solution, can't be more

- calcium hypochlorite

the main essence of the reaction is simple - we need a source of chlorine in one or another reagent, in industry we use gaseous chlorine

thats awesome easy, so i can just use normal household HCl. Will try that on some point
