Hi together,

i just found something helpful to build a 200l batch reactor yourself. It is a 200l stainless steel ton which can be bought from agriculture supply shops. it is used for milk storage. for better isolation it has 2 walls with vacuum in between.

ZkI510KLcM

idea for the tank itself:
0z6d7YQFPa

and for the lid:

Z5qMw7PL1r

one does not even have to be very talented to get this built yourself.
Stainless steel is not perfect but might be good enough for most or many use cases and further heating might be applied externally with something like a stove.

I am not sure about welding stainless steel, how easy it will be, but finding someone to weld those 3 connectors onto the ton will not be difficult or expensive.

i found several used ones for 50-150€

what do you guys think about it?

I think the main concept is cool but applying the product outlet on the bottom would make more sense to me + adding something that makes the reaction mass flow through the outlet completely without too many leftovers without compromising the stirrer would be a great addition too!

Besides, I wonder how regular stainless steel would work for strong acids? I heard of someone here using a stainless steel stirrer which just disappeared in the acidic solution he tried to stirr.

I was searching for paint resistant to chemicals and found this... No idea if good or not for that 200l reactor.

Chemically Resistant Epoxy Withstands a Year in Sulfuric & Hydrochloric Acid!

For applications demanding exceptional chemical resistance, especially to acids, fuels, and oils, Master Bond has developed EP21AR. Whether coating, lining, bonding or sealing, this two-component epoxy can withstand harsh, acidic environments, including prolonged immersion in 96-98% sulfuric acid and 36% hydrochloric acid for over a year.

With a dielectric strength of 400 volts/mil, EP21AR is a durable and stable epoxy that is also a superb electrical insulator. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is 45-55 ppm/°C, and it is serviceable from -60°F to +275°F. It produces high strength, abrasion resistant bonds with a tensile strength over 10,000 psi, a shear strength exceeding 2,700 psi, and a compressive strength greater than 14,000 psi at 75°F.

EP21AR is easy to use with a forgiving 2 to 1 mix ratio by weight, and a mixed viscosity of 10,000-15,000 cps. It is 100% reactive with no solvents or diluents and can be applied smoothly in any thickness. This epoxy has a working life of 45 to 55 minutes at ambient temperature for a 200 gram batch, and cures at room temperature or faster at elevated temperatures. It bonds well to a wide variety of substrates, including metals, glass, ceramics, cements, vulcanized rubbers, wood and many plastics.

EP21AR is packaged in pint, quart, gallon and 5 gallon container kits. It is widely used in an array of industries, including oil and chemical processing, maintenance and repair, optics, metalworking, appliance, and electrical/electronic.

workworkworkUnclen venster tackles the problem with coating the inside of a fire extinguisher,i guess it would do the trick in this vessel.
Nice work mate .
Breath thinking out of the box!!
I think you helped a lot of people to get to here goal👍

And I found other products to protect the metal reaction vessels in this thread about convert APAAN to P2P:
Glass vessels, such as round bottom flasks or reaction flasks, can be used as reaction vessels. Metal reaction vessels with a protective coating, such as enamel or Teflon on the inside, can also be used. The coating ensures the strong acids do not corrode the metal.

Because I found a relatively cheap product.
Clearnet:
Acab1312Nice man, the only problem I see here could be the stainless steel as it is not resistant to some chemicals used in the manufacturing of most common drugs.

Actually we stopped chatting on this thread.
I think the last thing we have tried to discuss was how to cover stainless steel tanks to make them suitable for the manufacturing of drugs.

I also thought that it would be difficult with stainless steel, but thanks for the quick answer

Gigantic industrial tanks are treated with HF (yes it is paradoxycally funny) in order for it to form a fluoride inner layer that is said to be resistant to conc. H2SO4... this I heard as a practical measure but have never tried it even if I'm sure there is plenty of theory behind, you just have to do your documentation, polymeric material inner coating makes perfect sense also.
