Scheme 1

Reagents and materials:
  • Ethanol 88% 600-700 ml
  • Powder black pepper 300 g
  • 24 g Potassium hydroxide KOH
  • 1600 ml distilled water
  • Paper filters diameter 180 mm
  • Flask 2000 ml
  • Beakers
  • Funnel
  • Heater
Place 300 g of black pepper powder and 500 ml of 88% EtOH into a 2000 ml flask. Fig 1

A solution of potassium hydroxide is prepared: 24 g Potassium hydroxide KOH + 200 ml water. Fig 3

The piperine extract in ethanol is filtered warm (40-50℃) into the prepared potassium hydroxide solution (if there is a deficiency of ethanol, more than half of the solvent can be distilled off and saved before mixing with the potassium hydroxide solution). The addition of potassium hydroxide or another alkali is necessary to remove resins. Fig 4

Powder of pepper is additionally washed with 100-200 ml of warm (40℃) ethanol on a filter. Fig 5
