The only thing I can imagine you are doing is potassium permanganate, which is purple and your making cathinone acetate from ephedrine? That's what it sounds like you are trying to do, but it doesn't sound like a very good method

well, if you put kmno4 on ephedrine, it oxidizes it to Cathinone, which means specifically, it attacke the hyroxy ion on the beta carbon and hauls of the hydrogen, and adds a bond the oxygen thats left. . That's all well ansd fine, wheer we go off of the rails is using acetic acid as your protonator,, it makes an acetate, but I've never heard of a cathinone acetate, most are hydrochlorides. Brown specks and stuff, no idea what thats about, nothing I know of. Keeping everything cool minimizes side reactions, butim not sure its necissary here, and the timethey are more than neccisary. I could surely find this synth in a 1905 patent, and it would give you the right way to do it, as far as time temperature scoichiometery ect. You basically have to be a mathmatician to calculate everything, so it's better to emulate someone else, winging it is not a good idea
