You can measure and calculate it fairly easily,mthe $10 trickmwill only give you a rough idea, a polaremeter is a vernier mesuring device, so it measures minutes of an angle, andnalong with the temperature, the mole count of the solution andnthe length of the column a formua is calculated that will tell you the optical rotation. The $10 trick will tell you if its racemic, if its predominantly R or S, or roughly what the enamtiomericity is
