Obtaining Opium from the whole poppy plant!

Hello everyone, I have 50 poppies that are growing, they have flowered by now. I was interested in extracting the opium from the whole plant because scoring the poppy pod seems to me to be a waste of poppy, because the whole plant contains alkaloids.

But I am not sure how to do it, should I pluck it from the ground wash it and then boil in water, filter it, and then evaporate water?

Or what would be a better procedure?

Not a waste at all if you want 2 times your yield or greater as the poppy when properly scored will continue to ooze the latex your after and continuing to make More which would not happen just cutting them down.. it will still work though putting em in a pot of water and lightly simmering filtering scraping but I like to separate stalks from pods and boil and reduce like you were saying..

Thats how its done - extract the whole plant. Harvest, dry bone dry and grind as fine as possible. Alcohol (any) is the solvent of choice, water is not good at all.

Why not water? Can you elaborate on the method? should I harvest when they are dry, because I usually harvest them when they are at peak maturity when they have the most opium aka still green.

As long as it’s been 5-7 days after all petals have fallen you should get good yield simmering down with water but don’t go over 80 C (think 45 C is best) temp wise as can start breaking down the morphine.. Should definitely scrape or score one and see if it starts oozing goodness..

No they do not decompose at that temp morphine is purified by sublimation frequently in lit *and u can smoke it lmaooo*

Morphine is more readily soluable in ether or chloroform rather than water, because it is basic in its natural form. We must use an acidic solution to get it to convert into water soluable salt. It said it can be isolated with the precise pH, That and I guess you have to salt twice if you want it super clean, since it starts as base.

I have heard that slicing the pods does indeed provide more latex material. However, overall the same amount of alkaloids are generally there. In other words, the latex has a diminishing quality/return - it turns into water weight?. Harvest all at once when dry, less effort. You might need some latex to get to work though, whatever is clever.

Th pharma producers plant acres, cut them off with combain and press them to make a poppy straw from which they get the codeine morphine or thebaine, less yield as the popy will not produce a few yields but much less work, you must look into production of that popy straw
