Enormous amounts of safrole are used in technical perfumery and scented soaps and commercial cleansers. The oil of camphor from Southeast Asia has quantities of safrole.

The documentary film "Forest of ecstasy" (Vanguard 2009) is investigating the issue on location.

Safrole was first banned, before the "war on drugs" because of carcenigenic effects. Safrole was LATER on the watched list of precursor chemicals for drug manufacturing.
