Over 1,100 AI experts, including prominent names such as Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, have called for a halt on developing AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, until appropriate safety measures are put in place. The open letter, released by nonprofit group the Future of Life Institute, argues that society is not yet prepared for the potential risks that such powerful AI systems could bring. The letter calls for a six-month pause, which should be public and verifiable, or a moratorium on such development by governments if this cannot be achieved.

While some people assume that technological progress cannot be slowed down, the open letter points out that decisions about which types of AI are built and how fast to go are ultimately up to humans to make. The key point is to strike a wise balance between the potential benefits and risks that AI could bring. The more power AI has to disrupt life, the more confident we need to be that we can handle the disruptions and think they are worthwhile.

Many Sci-Fi authors over the decades have shown us their vision of a future where humanity was enslaved or destroyed by artificial intelligence. We have seen this in Matrix, Terminator, Blade Runner and thousands of other projects. But it always seemed to us that if there was going to be one, it would be sometime later. However, the revolution came so suddenly that no one was prepared for it. Today we see only the rudimentary beginnings of future technologies. But they are already forcing humanity to start thinking about the future.

What do you expect from the mass adoption of these technologies in everyday life?

rothschild33careful though, it will give precise answers to specific questions if asked by knowing chemistry it helps but people without chemical understanding got oddly infeasible answers in terms of applicability...almost like the machine was mocking them

LittleI don't think this artificial intelligence is saying things correctly, even in a simple middle school problem, it makes mistakes. Artificial intelligence is useless.

We won't be able to stop AI from spreading allover the world, we can only find ways to live with it in the future.
What we see right now is not even the tip of the iceberg and is also in it's most primal state in terms of development..

AI came already in the 1980's, nobody remembers? When the US discovered that the Japanese are just a step away from AI and taking over the world?
This led to the US sabotaging and pressuring the Japanese into submission.
And now? Not much difference.

Honestly I wish it was different and we would see really intelligent machines and not just programs which have the mindset of the typical reddit user, or worse, reddit mod. But so AI is the same what superheroes are: Endorsed with super-powers but not blessed with nippels.

Here is my biggest concern for us. I am worried some of us might use something like chat gpt for making product listing, advertising, messaging customers. IDK anything normal eCommerce will use it for, we will probably implement it somehow. I think it is an opsec concern. For example AI might be able to be used by LE to determine that AI was used to write something on the darknet and track back to that person. There is probably a whole host of other things that could be used to identify users. We should tread with caution

I have seen that a lot of new smart phones are now implementing AI in out of the box set up. I see this being a real OPSEC concern
