Try and figure out. Share us your research data. In theory, it's quite weak base and it would be not enough to eliminate -OH group.

has anyone done the microwave version of this synthesis, curious as to the outcome?

This is an effective method. I irradiate at maximum power in short time intervals so that the mixture does not have time to boil.

that is the key, stopping the irradiation just prior or as soon as you see 1 tiny bubble rise up, did this method with very good success, simple but very effective. would be very interested if there's other synths that can be done using the microwave??

Stop when strong boiling begins. Yes, this is visible by bubbles. There are many different syntheses with MW, there are also on the forum. I think that ultrasound for p2np should also work well.

There are a variety (cyclohexylamine, butylamine, ammonium acetate, methylamine, etc. ) of such catalysts

With benzaldehyde and nitroethane ---> P2NP
