I’ve been trying to synthesize ketamine following this paper, but after the final step with decalin I don’t get any product—everything disappears. I’m a beginner, yet I have a colleague who spent 30 years in Mexico working with this type of compounds, and we’re confident we’re not making any mistakes. However, after carefully reading the paper we noticed that in Section 2.5 the text refers to using sodium nitrate (NaNO₃), whereas Scheme 4 contradicts this and mentions sodium nitrite (NaNO₂). We’d like to ask whether you have replicated this paper in the lab using nitrate, because in your write-up you specify—both in the text and in the diagram—that it is nitrate. My colleague thinks nitrite makes more sense, but in our country it’s a controlled substance and we don’t want to invest significant resources obtaining it if it’s the wrong reagent. Could you please confirm whether nitrate is indeed the correct choice?
