Ett något enklare alternativ för att producera metylamin skulle vara att reducera nitrometan CH3NO2 till metylamin CH3NH2 via Al/Hg-amalgam.

CH3NO2 + H2 ---> CH3NH2+ H2O

Det känns som om det finns en anledning, för att använda modellflygbränsle för att göra metylamin in vitro är en vanlig väg... antingen bryts det ner snabbt eller... det låter som en energisk reaktion
