I have a question for chemistry lovers: why can't you use monoethanolamine as an alternative to methylamine? If you mix ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and formaldehyde (HCHO), the reaction will probably be similar to getting methylamine (CH3NH2), which is formed when formaldehyde reacts with ammonium chloride, right? but if you mix ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and formaldehyde (HCHO) at a concentration of 37% and heat the mixture, an amidization reaction can occur, resulting in the formation of monoethanolamine (MEA) (NH2CH2CH2OH) so, can monoethanolamine be used as an alternative to methylamine?

It depends, as a catalyst I have used it for henry reaction with no problem, very effective, but it's not going to behave the same in other reactions, the hidroxi group makes this a whole other molecule with a wildly different set of properties.
If you are unable to buy it you can make it as you said with formaldehyde and NH4Cl, Nilered has a video on this.Or maybe try looking for ethylamine, or reduce nitromethane.

From my readings, one can hydrolyzed n methyl formaimed to get methylamine and formic acid, but it is a watched chemical. However, n mehylacetamide, which is somewhat available on foreign auction sites, can also be hydrolyzed into acetic acid and methylamine
