Hi guys, I managed to write the synthesis of n-butylamine to ChatGPT somehow, but I don't have much knowledge about chemistry and I have a few questions:
1- Does it really work?
2- Is the size of the balloon important that I used for the reaction?

here is the synthesis:

C) Synthesis of n-butylamine

CHEMICALS: Materials needed:

  • 4.4 g sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
  • 8.2 g sodium chloride (NaCl)
  • 8.5 mL n-butanol (CH3(CH2)3OH)
  • 50 mL distilled water (H2O)
  • 100 mL flat-bottomed flask (250 mL)
  • 100 mL round-bottomed flask (250 mL)
  • Cooling bath (pre-cooled in the fridge)
  • Water bath (set to 60-70 °C)
Preparation:
1- Add 4.4 g NaOH and 8.2 g NaCl to the flat-bottomed flask.
2- Add 50 mL distilled water and stir.
3- Fill the flask with 100 mL n-butanol and stir well.
4- Place the round-bottomed flask in the cooling bath.
5- Pour the NaOH/NaCl/water mixture into the round-bottomed flask.
6- Add the n-butanol from the flat-bottomed flask to the round-bottomed flask.
7- Heat slowly in the water bath and stir.
8- Continue heating and stirring for 1 hour.
9- Remove the round-bottomed flask from the cooling bath and let it cool to room temperature.
10- Carefully remove the upper layer and discard the bottom liquid layer.
11- Transfer the upper layer to the flat-bottomed flask and stir well.
12- To obtain pure n-butylamine, use a distillation apparatus to separate the mixture in the flat-bottomed flask into pure n-butylamine.

The distillation in step 12 can be carried out using the following steps:

1- Transfer the reaction mixture to a glass distillation column. Place a small amount of glass wool at the bottom of the column.
2- Place a heating source under the column and connect the column to a water-cooled condenser.
3- Begin heating the reaction mixture, and when the liquid begins to vaporize, lower the temperature of the heating source under the column to slow down the reaction.
4- The vaporized liquid will condense on the glass wool in the column and drip down back to the heating source under the column.
5- At the point where n-butylamine gas is formed, a higher temperature is required. Therefore, increase the temperature of the heating source under the column to allow the n-butylamine gas to condense at this point.
6- The condensed n-butylamine gas will be cooled by the condenser and turn back into liquid form.
7- The liquid n-butylamine will drip into a collection flask placed under the condenser.
8- Once the distillation process is complete, the n-butylamine should be collected from the collection flask and stored in another container.

Your best bet for a primary amine is to buy or if you are hell bent to make it you can sunthesize methylamine hcl by refluxing hexamine with HCl

Wow I can only imagine the horror of synthesizing that compound. Just opening and pouring from the reagent grade bottle was a trip.

You oxidize N-Butanol with PCC, then use the butyraldehyde and mix it with ammonia solution in water and ethanol to make the imine, then reduce it with non-toxic Aluminum Galinstan amalgam to make N-Butylamine.
