I've seen this over on the vespiary, but I don't know of it actually works.

Anyone care to speculate?

Yes, it works.
I can confirm it 100%, but note that although thionyl chloride is relatively simple chemical, it's Schedule 3 substance of CWC (Chemical Weapons Convention),
so it's hard to get, moreover it's hard to prepare without proper equipment.
