You want a molar equivalent , these are hypothetical amounts, but say the the 6g of ephedrine is 20mmol of one mol of ephedrine then you'd want 20mmol equivalent of pseudo.im by no mean a pro and have never even looked up the molecular weight of either of them put that's the idea .
There's a post on here somewhere I believe from patten that is very detailed and informative about the subject definitely look it up because this is something that is very important in all reactions.

Yes, you can use toluene, benzene, xylene, either. They will not be distilled with the solvent because their boiling point is higher than that of the solvent. You can directly enter the hydrogen chloride gas after drying, without affecting it.

After the extraction is completed, keep your toluene solution, and add sodium sulfate to the solution to dry. Filter, then put hydrogen chloride gas into the solution, and the white powder is your product.

Great workup, thanks for sharing. Been do this type of reduction twice, first exactly like the writeup ephedrine firs followed by h3po2 then iodine and its really intense reaction. Reflux for 6 hours and only get about 33% yield.
The second is i make the hi first in boiling flask by mixing iodine to h3po2 under cold condition. then pour the ephedrine, this way its not so intense like the first, reflux for about 8 hours and i get about 51 % yield
